im doing a study on the names of Jesus. i came across LoyolaPress and found under the heading "Son of David" that Jesus took his lineage from joseph (tribe of Judah, house of David).where i was thrown is at the insertion of "however" in the text.

Dear "rjpfojc,"

Thanks for your question. I'm not totally sure why the author chose to use the word "however" in this explanation, however :) I presume that she is saying that it was expected that the Messiah would be the natural offspring of someone from the House of David. Since Jesus is "begotten, not made" and was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, he is not the natural offspring of a member of the House of David. "However," with Joseph as his foster-father, Jesus can be considered of the House of David, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
